In the world of artisanal concentrates, not all hash is created equal. To the uninitiated, it might all look like “concentrate,” but to the connoisseur and the Hash Master, the difference lies in the detailsthe micron size, the star rating, and the purity of the melt. At Piedmont Green, we believe that understanding these technical nuances is the key to appreciating the true craft of solventless extraction.

The Science of the Micron: Why Size Matters in Hash Making
The foundation of high-quality bubble hash is the mechanical separation of trichome heads from the plant material. This is achieved using a series of mesh screens, measured in microns (bc).
Navigating the Micron Range: From 25bc to 160bc
During the washing process, we use various “micron bags” to capture different sizes of resin glands. – The 160bc – 190bc Range: Often contains more plant “contaminant” and is typically used for edibles or topicals.- The 70bc – 120bc Range: This is the “sweet spot.” This range captures the most mature, resin-rich trichome heads, resulting in the highest potency and best flavor profile.- The 25bc – 45bc Range: Contains smaller, often less mature heads, resulting in a different cannabinoid and terpene profile.
The “Full Spectrum” vs. Isolated Micron Pulls
At Piedmont Green, we often talk about “Full Spectrum” hash, which combines the best pulls (typically 45bc through 159bc) to capture the widest range of the plant’s natural chemistry. However, for our most premium offerings, we may isolate a specific micron range to provide a targeted, elite experience.

The Star Rating System: A Universal Standard for Purity
To help consumers understand the quality of what they are buying, the industry uses a 1-to-6 star rating system. This system is based primarily on how the hash reacts to heatits “meltability.”
1-2 Stars: Food Grade Hash
This hash contains a higher percentage of plant matter (stalks, leaves, etc.). It does not melt well and is best suited for infusing into butter or oils for cooking.
3-4 Stars: Half-Melt Hash
This is a high-quality product that can be smoked or vaped, but it will leave some charred residue (plant matter) behind. It is often used to “bowl dress” or enhance flower.
5-6 Stars: Full-Melt Purity
This is the pinnacle of the craft. 6-star hash is composed almost entirely of pure resin heads. When heat is applied, it liquefies completely, leaving zero residue behind. This is the “Full-Melt” experience that connoisseurs seek out for dabbing.

Achieving Full-Melt: The Piedmont Green Standard
Achieving a 6-star rating requires perfection at every stage of the process, from the genetics we choose to the temperature of the water in our wash.
The Role of Genetics in Resin Quality
Not every strain is a “washer.” Some plants produce trichomes that are too fragile or have stalks that break off too easily. We specifically select and breed strains that are known for their high resin production and “greasy” texture, which are essential for achieving that elusive full-melt status.
Cold-Room Processing and the Preservation of Terpenes
Heat is the enemy of quality hash. We process our concentrates in a climate-controlled “cold room” to prevent the volatile terpenes from evaporating and the resin from becoming too sticky to handle. This meticulous temperature control is what allows us to maintain the light color and intense aroma that define Piedmont Green concentrates.
Why Technical Transparency Matters for NC Consumers
As the North Carolina market matures, we want our customers to be informed buyers. Understanding microns and star ratings allows you to choose the product that matches your desired experience and budget.
